Accelerated Education and Inclusive Learning
Overview
PADet recognizes that thousands of children in Ethiopia remain out of school due to poverty, conflict, displacement, or early childhood responsibilities. To address this challenge, PADet in partnership with Geneva Global (GGE) implements Accelerated Education Programs (AEPs) that provide flexible, high-quality learning opportunities for overage and out-of-school children, helping them reintegrate into formal education and achieve lifelong learning skills.
The Accelerated Education/Speed School model was introduced and is led globally by Geneva Global, and is implemented in Ethiopia through partnerships with local organizations such as PADet. Through initiatives such as the Speed School/Accelerated Learning for Africa (ALFA) project supported by Geneva Global and complementary community-led interventions, PADet empowers children who never had the chance to attend school to complete the first three years of primary education in just ten months. The program uses activity-based, child-centered learning methods that promote inclusion, confidence, and long-term educational success.
PADet’s accelerated education work under the Geneva Global–supported Speed School/ALFA program is currently active in Amhara and Oromia Regions, with indirect impact extending to Afar through replication by local education offices.
Objectives
PADet’s accelerated education programs, implemented in partnership with Geneva Global, are designed to:
- Increase access to basic education for out-of-school and overage children (ages 9–14).
- Reintegrate learners into the formal school system after completing accelerated classes.
- Improve the quality of teaching and learning through activity-based, participatory approaches.
- Build community ownership and ensure sustainability through partnerships with parents, local authorities, and schools.
- Promote inclusion and equity, particularly for girls, children with disabilities, and those affected by displacement or poverty.
Program Components
- Speed School / ALFA Classes
At the heart of PADet’s accelerated learning model are the Speed School (ALFA) classes, which condense three years of primary education into one academic year using interactive, learner-centered teaching. Each class accommodates children who have never attended school and helps them transition into nearby government schools (link schools) after completion.
Since its inception, the ALFA project has provided access to education for over 6,000 children across Amhara and Oromia Regions.
- Self-Help Groups (SHG) for Mothers
The program empowers parents particularly mothers through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) linked to ALFA classes. Over 5,950 mothers have organized savings and micro-enterprise groups, building resilience while supporting their children’s education. These groups also engage in functional adult literacy and community development activities, strengthening family involvement in learning.
- Primary School Capacity Building (PSCB)
PADet, in partnership with Geneva Global (GGE) supports 60 linked primary schools and over 420 teachers through continuous professional development on activity-based learning, early warning systems for dropout prevention, and community engagement. This ensures that the formal schools receiving ALFA graduates can sustain quality and inclusive education.
- Child-to-Child (C2C) Learning Model
Through the C2C initiative, older students’ mentor and support younger children to prepare for school enrollment. This model has enabled 1,250 children to begin their educational journeys at the right age, improving the Net Enrolment Ratio (NER) in remote and pastoralist communities.
- Popular Participation in Curriculum and Instruction (PCI)
PADet, in partnership with Geneva Global (GGE) fosters collaboration between teachers and community resource persons to integrate local knowledge, livelihoods, and traditions into the curriculum. This strengthens the relevance of education and demonstrates its value in both rural and urban livelihoods.
- Education Community of Practice (ECoP)
To ensure ongoing learning and collaboration, PADet, in partnership with Geneva Global (GGE) has established Education Communities of Practice (ECoPs) that connect educators, local leaders, and development partners. These platforms provide professional support, encourage innovation, and reduce teacher isolation, ensuring the long-term success of accelerated education models.
Results and Achievements
PADet’s accelerated learning interventions have demonstrated measurable progress:
- 6,000 out-of-school children (50% girls) gained access to primary education.
- Over 5,950 mothers are empowered through SHGs to support children’s schooling and improve livelihoods.
- 420 teachers trained in activity-based, inclusive teaching methods.
- 60 primary schools strengthened with learning materials and early-warning systems.
- 1,250 children supported through C2C mentorship to enroll at the appropriate age.
- Improved retention and transition rates, with thousands of learners successfully integrated into formal schools.
- Enhanced community participation and sustainability through local education offices adopting PADet’s ALFA model in new woredas.
Impact
PADet, in partnership with Geneva Global (GGE) Accelerated Education Program has proven to be a model of inclusive, community-driven education in crisis and recovery contexts. It has not only transformed access to learning for marginalized children but also empowered families especially women to take ownership of their children’s futures.
By linking accelerated learning with child protection, livelihoods, and psychosocial support, PADet ensures that every child’s right to education is fulfilled, even in the most challenging circumstances. The success of the program continues to inspire replication by regional education offices and partner organizations, reaffirming PADet’s leadership in innovative education delivery in Ethiopia.
