Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

PADet envisions a society where women and girls have equal opportunities to thrive, lead, and shape their futures. We believe that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a cornerstone of sustainable development. Our programs aim to dismantle barriers that limit women’s participation and create environments where they can reach their full potential—socially, economically, and politically.

Through a combination of advocacy, capacity building, and community engagement, PADet promotes transformative change in attitudes, behaviors, and systems. We work directly with women, men, youth, community leaders, and institutions to foster inclusive, equitable communities where women’s voices are heard and valued.

Our efforts focus on addressing gender-based violence (GBV), expanding women’s access to education and economic opportunities, and increasing their participation in leadership and decision-making processes.

Our Approach

  • Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Strengthening community-based protection systems, improving referral pathways, and providing psychosocial support to survivors.

  • Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods: Supporting women’s financial independence through vocational skills training, access to microfinance, and entrepreneurship programs.

  • Leadership and Decision-Making: Building the confidence and capacity of women and girls to take on leadership roles in their communities and local governance structures.

  • Social Norms Transformation: Engaging men, boys, religious leaders, and elders to challenge harmful gender norms and promote equitable relationships.

  • Partnership and Advocacy: Collaborating with government institutions, UN agencies, and civil society organizations to influence gender-responsive policies and practices.

Our Track Record

GBV Prevention and Response Projects
Supported by UN Women, these projects strengthen GBV prevention and response mechanisms in crisis-affected and high-risk areas. PADet provides case management, psychosocial support, legal referral services, and training for service providers to ensure survivors receive timely and compassionate care. The projects also raise awareness about women’s rights and advocate for stronger protection frameworks at the community and institutional levels.

Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative
This initiative promotes women’s financial autonomy through vocational training, access to microfinance, and business development support. Participants gain practical skills in areas such as tailoring, agriculture, food processing, and small-scale trade. PADet also facilitates market linkages and cooperative development, helping women establish sustainable sources of income and contribute to their household and community economies.

Community Dialogues on Gender Equality
PADet organizes regular community dialogues that bring together religious leaders, youth, elders, and local officials to openly discuss gender equality, power dynamics, and the impact of harmful traditional practices. These dialogues help shift social attitudes, encourage collective responsibility, and create long-term behavioral change that supports women’s rights and dignity.

Our Impact

PADet’s gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives have reached thousands of women and community members across Ethiopia. Through our integrated approach, we have:

  • Improved access to justice, healthcare, and psychosocial support for survivors of GBV.

  • Enhanced economic independence for women through skills training and microenterprise opportunities.

  • Increased women’s participation in community leadership, local governance, and advocacy platforms.

  • Fostered community-level attitude shifts toward gender equality and mutual respect.

By centering women’s voices and engaging entire communities in dialogue and action, PADet continues to build a foundation for lasting equality—where every woman and girl can live free from violence, achieve her potential, and contribute to the prosperity of her community and country.
