Child Safeguarding and Development

PADet is dedicated to ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment. We believe that all children—regardless of background, gender, or circumstance—deserve protection, access to education, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our child safeguarding and development initiatives focus on preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation, while strengthening community systems to uphold children’s rights. PADet works closely with families, schools, local leaders, and government partners to create lasting change through awareness, capacity building, and service delivery.

We place special attention on vulnerable children, including those engaged in child labor, affected by migration, or exposed to violence. By combining protection with education and psychosocial support, PADet helps children rebuild their confidence, reintegrate into school, and envision brighter futures.

Our Approach

  • Child Protection Systems Strengthening: Building community-based mechanisms that identify, prevent, and respond to child abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

  • Safe Migration and Reintegration: Supporting children and families affected by unsafe migration or exploitative labor through rehabilitation and reintegration services.

  • Access to Education: Ensuring that all children, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, have access to quality early learning and formal education.

  • Community and Caregiver Engagement: Educating parents, guardians, and community leaders to recognize and prevent child abuse and to promote positive parenting.

  • Advocacy and Policy Support: Collaborating with local authorities to influence child protection policies and strengthen legal frameworks.

Our Track Record

Community-Based Child Protection Structures
PADet has established child protection committees and trained local volunteers across target regions to detect, report, and respond to cases of abuse and neglect. These community structures form a vital safety net for vulnerable children by linking families to local services and promoting accountability. Through continuous mentoring and partnership with local authorities, the system ensures that protection measures are both sustainable and locally owned.

Child Domestic Workers and Safe Migration Project
Supported by the Freedom Fund, this project focuses on protecting children from exploitative domestic work and unsafe migration. It identifies and rehabilitates children engaged in hazardous labor, provides psychosocial and educational support, and reunites them with their families when possible. PADet also works to raise community awareness on child labor, supports alternative livelihood options for families, and strengthens coordination between local institutions to address the root causes of child exploitation.

Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Centers
PADet’s ECCD centers offer holistic early learning environments that integrate education, nutrition, hygiene, and psychosocial care. These centers provide children with a strong developmental foundation during their formative years while also supporting parents through awareness sessions on child health, nutrition, and positive parenting. By investing in early education, PADet helps break the cycle of poverty and promotes lifelong learning.

Our Impact

PADet’s child safeguarding and development programs have reached thousands of children and families across multiple regions in Ethiopia. Through sustained community partnerships, we have:

  • Strengthened local child protection structures and increased community accountability.

  • Withdrawn and rehabilitated children from exploitative labor and unsafe migration.

  • Expanded access to quality early childhood education and nutrition support.

  • Empowered caregivers and community members to actively protect children’s rights.

By placing children at the heart of its mission, PADet continues to build safe, inclusive, and nurturing communities where every child can learn, grow, and thrive with dignity and hope for the future.
